How does digitalization affect administrative and legal processes?

The workshop will take place at MPI in Halle, from Thursday, 14.11., 11:00 a.m. to Friday, 15.11. um 12:30 p.m.

How are digital technologies transforming the processes and procedures of government and justice, and what does it mean for citizens to interact with AI-assisted judgments and track applications online, and what does it mean for (state) employees to be exposed to dashboards and to translate paper records into digital resources? These are the questions at the heart of this interdisciplinary course, which draws on the combined expertise of social anthropology and law to examine the intersection of technology, power, governance, and law. Students will engage with ethnographic studies, legal documents, and research reports from professional organizations to critically examine how the shift from paper-based to digitally mediated institutions is changing our understanding of authority and power. The course will enable students to critically assess the impact of digital tools on transparency, access to justice, and the equitable treatment of individuals within legal and administrative systems.
