What to Do in Your Spare Time
MPI’s neighborhood
Within walking radius of 5 to 30 minutes, there are several sites to visit:
- have a look at the famous Nebra Sky Disc at State Museum for Prehistory;
- have an ice cream, coffee/tea, snack or drink at one of the cafés, bars or restaurant at Reileck, in Ludwig-Wucherer-Straße, Burgstraße, Kleine Ulrichstraße or at August-Bebel-Platz;
- enjoy good spring-time weather in a beer garden at Felsenpavillon or Peißnitzhaus; or
- just promenade across the gardens and parks around oldest Saale castle “Burg Giebichenstein” and along the shores of the river Saale or over the Peißnitz Island.

Shops
Supermarkets near MPI are Konsum in Bernburger Straße and Konsum in Burgstraße. Edeka in Ludwig-Wucherer-Straße is a 24-h supermarket on weekdays. A store for care and beauty products can be found at Reileck. For ‘emergencies’ on the weekend, there is Nahkauf supermarket (opening hours on Google Maps are not correct; see following link!) in Halle main station (open on Saturdays until 23:00 and on Sundays until 22:00 h).
Cinemas
If you feel like cinema, there are for options:
- Luchskino and
- Puschkino (both a 10- to 15-min walk from the MPI), and
- Zazie Kino Bar (city centre) have some films in original language with German subtitles.
- Cinemaxx (website in German only) is a multiplex located near Riebeckplatz/main station.
Museums and other sights
There are several museums, amongst them the
- State Museum for Prehistory with the famous Bronze Age ‘Nebra Sky Disc’ (3-min walk from MPI);
- art gallery Kunsthalle “Talstrasse” (website in German only);
- the art museum Moritzburg (gallery is based in the ‘youngest’ castle at the shores of the river Saale); or
- the Beatles Museum (website in German only).
Other sights are Halle Zoo or the Planetarium.
Theatres and Opera
Bühnen Halle (website in German only) is the website for theatre, opera, and puppet theatre.
Leipzig Book Fair
The famous Leipzig Book Fair takes place from 21 to 24 March 2024. Public transport between Halle and Leipzig is included in the book-fair tickets (individual tickets between €13.50 and €27.00). The journey from Halle main station to the book fair takes roughly 20 min by suburban train (lines S5 and S5X).
Grassi Museum for Ethnography in Leipzig
With over 200,000 objects it is among the largest ethnographic collections in Germany, with items from East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Oceania, and Australia.
