The End(s) of the Global?

Research Seminar

This seminar will take up the adjective that features in the name of our graduate school. What is globalisation and how exactly is the present a global present? Based on a number of readings, we will discuss the historical development of contemporary globalisation and how it affects cultures and societies. We will reflect on the world economic system and how it perpetuates inequalities between the North and the South. We will consider how global organisations and standard-setting instruments penetrate our lives, often in a dialectic in which nation states use them to their advantage. And we will ask whether there are useful theories of how the contemporary world is one interconnected but also deeply divided place.
